A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. The fob with an intaglio or signet seal would have been used to seal the wax of a letter or note.
A wonderful and unusual fob from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in 9kt yellow gold, this whimsical figural fob features an?embowed arm covered in armor, slid under two straps, grasping?a shield.?At?the base of the thick, polished gold bezel-set fob is a rich brown agate seal featuring the Latin phrase "DECREVI" meaning "I decided" carved onto the surface of a folded banner. Beneath the phrase is another embowed arm, covered in armor, and grasping a spherical-shaped weapon. The ornate gold figural arm features rich details including textured armored plates, rivets on the shield straps, and even fingernails, making this piece come to life. A simple round bail, stamped "9" and "375" is attached at the top, perfect for adding to your favorite chain.?A unique and beautiful fob pendant, it?would make a wonderful addition to any fob collection!
Measurement: The fob hangs?approximately 1 3/8" long, is 3/4" at its widest point and 5/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold, and the agate?seal is intact and free of any chips or scratches. The bail?is secure and intact.
